Jason Breach – Demo 2024 – Project 2 – Pagoda Box

Project 2 starts with a Cherry 4” x 6” block. They are split into a 2” block for the lid and 4” block for the base on a bandsaw.
A bowl gouge was used to start forming the shape, additional care needs to be taken this time as we are dealing with a square edge for the pagoda. Run the gouge against the solid stock prior to pulling back and then making a cut. This is a straight cut, but you can have it either upturned or even down turned. At this stage, the rim and hollowing out of the waste was completed in the same manner of the first box. The only difference this time is that from the square surface, an ogre shape is produced to go down to the rim.

The box body can now be mounted to be shaped, this being the square, and then the main area of the body is shaped. The base is again turned so that we have a tight fit between the two pieces, the shoulders need to be square and straight for this. With the lid being mounted on the base now being used as a jam chuck, the additional waste can be removed so that a finial can be produced from the same material. Again the under finger technique on the tool rest was used for this, the finial can be any shape that you want.

With the lid now completed, Jason turned his attention back to the base. The outer shape being produced with a bowl gouge, when complete moving on to the main area was of the base was hollowed out a dedicated scraping tool used to smooth the main area. The inner part of the bowl was made flat, both the bottom and the side, this being done with a modified Bedan tool.
At this point Jason demonstrated how to sharpen the various tools used, by using a diamond flat grinding tool which is measured to 600 microns.

Jason again produced a jam chuck so that the base can be inverted and mounted. The base of the square is now cut so that it leaves the corners standing proud, the base is undercut so that a small finial can be produced either end.
If you are having trouble with seeing the ghosting of the square edges, use a white piece of paper under the project, this will help you to see it better.
