If you are interested in joining the club, we would recommend that initially you joins us on one of our regular meetings, which are usually on the 3rd Thursday each month. For details, look at the “Events” section of this website.
The first one or two meetings are free of charge, and after that we will then ask you to joins us if you want to participate in our meetings on a regular basis.
Our club is associated with the Association of Woodturners of Great Britain (AWGB), and in consequence every club member also has to become an AWGB member. AWGB membership is £18 per year. In addition we collect £10 per year from each member to cover the rent of the ruoom at the Dudley College.
Once you are a member, there are some door fees that apply to our meetings: £3 for a hands-on evening and £5 for a demonstration. These fees allow us to hire professional demonstrators and cover other expenses (such as tea/coffee/biscuits for breaks, insurance, tools and materials). At the moment we do not have a scheme whereby a member could pay all event fees up front in a lumpsum payment.
In addition to the monthly meetings, the club will participate in external events to promote the craft of woodturning. Very often we will have a sales and display table, where items donated by members will be sold by the club to generate revenue, and most of this revenue is donated to our current chosen charity, the Mary Stevens Hospice in Stourbridge. There will also be an opportunity for club members to sell their work directly to the public.
For the last two years, the club has organized one or more full-day events, also held at the Dudley College. Fees for these events depend on the subject. A full day demonstration by a professional turner usually attracts a £10 door charge.
